Creative Writing
Katie is completing her memoir about growing up with Crohn’s disease. Diagnosed at age 11, illness left a mark on all aspects of her coming of age creating a feeling of both being ahead and behind, lonely and part of a greater community.
She is also working on a novel about the changing Oakland landscape in the 90s, through gentrification and climate change, is also underway. The book looks at characters on one block in Oakland, how they arrived there and how they leave.
Copywriter & More
Katie is a freelance copywriter specializing in digital content including blog posts, social media, website writing, copyediting, taglines, ad copy, style guides, and more. She also works as a grant writer and editor for numerous clients. She specializes in creating a unique voice and tone for her clients.
Clients (past and present) include: AskSustainable, Radiant Logic, Culimer, Tempo, Belonging Begins With Us, The Helen Diller Institute, altMBA, and Consciously.
Music
For two years Katie was Music Editor at a local nonprofit news organization called Oakland Local. She wrote about music and occasionally politics. While she no longer writes about music, she still plays and teaches guitar.
Politics and Law
After receiving her BA in Political Science, Katie worked as a paralegal in an immigration law office. She went on to study where the individual fits into international law at The University of Glasgow in Scotland. She researched the intersection of public opinion, international law compliance, and public policy at University College London before moving from academia to journalism and writing.
Katie is currently the Neighborhood Council Chair of the Greater San Antonio area of East Oakland where she works with city officials, local non-profits, schools, and neighbors to help an area affected by such deep-seated problems as human trafficking, gun violence, illegal dumping, dangerous sideshows, and homelessness.
